Resize an STL without any software
Sometimes the model you downloaded is too big for your printer or too small for what you want: an 8 cm figure, a bracket that has to be exactly 45 mm, an ornament at twice the size. Here you scale it in the browser and download the STL at its new size.
You can scale by percentage (50% is half, 200% is double) or ask for an exact size on one side: the tool works out the percentage and adjusts the other two so the part isn't distorted.
Before shrinking a part
When you scale down, walls, holes and details get thinner too. A 1.2 mm wall at 50% becomes 0.6 mm, which a 0.4 mm nozzle can barely print. If the part fits with another (screws, lids, shafts), tolerances change too: print a small test first.
Scaling up loses nothing, but uses more filament and time: check the cost in the cost calculator.
Tips
- To "fit the printer", pick the longest side and set it to your bed size minus 10 mm.
- If the file uses another unit (it looks tiny), change "Units" first and then scale.
- For mechanical parts, scale in your original design program: here everything scales evenly, holes included.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make my STL exactly 10 cm?
Choose "An exact measurement", the side you want (for example, Height) and type 100 mm. The other sides adjust automatically so it isn't distorted.
Can I stretch it on just one side?
No: here it always scales evenly, so the part isn't distorted.
Does it lose quality when scaled?
No. The triangles move to their new place; the detail is the same.
Is my file uploaded to the internet?
No. It scales in your browser.
Why is there a download limit?
The tool is free and supported by advertising. Each visit includes 5 downloads; to keep going, open the page again.
