How to print in two colors with a single nozzle

The trick of changing filament at a certain height, for two-color keychains, signs and plaques.

The trick: change color at a certain height

You don't need a multi-color printer for your keychain or sign to come out in two colors. The parts from our converters have a flat base with the relief on top (the QR, the letters, the signature). If the printer makes the base in one color, stops, you swap the filament and it continues with the relief, the part comes out in two colors.

Below each converter's 3D preview we tell you the exact height for the change: for example, "Color change at 3 mm (layer 16 at 0.2 mm)".

How to add the change in your slicer

Menu names vary a little between versions, but in all of them it's done in the layer preview:

During the print

When the printer stops, pull out the base filament, load the second color and push a little until it comes out clean from the nozzle (with no trace of the previous color). Then resume from the printer's screen.

If your printer doesn't recognize the automatic color change, use the pause option: it works the same, you just do the swap by hand.

So it reads well

If you have a multi-color printer

With a multi-color system (such as AMS, MMU or similar), download the 2-color file from our converters: it's a 3MF that already contains the base and the relief as two parts of one object, in place. Open it in your slicer and assign a filament to each part. If your slicer doesn't open 3MF, the two separate STLs are right below the button.

Frequently asked questions

Does the join between the two colors show?

No: the relief prints on top of the base and bonds well. Just purge the nozzle properly when you swap so there are no streaks of the first color.

Can I do more than two colors?

Yes, with more pauses at different heights, but each color has to start on a different layer. For two colors on the same layer you need a multi-color printer.
